During this 8-hour private guided tour of Bassano Del Grappa & Asolo from Rome, you will have the opportunity to discover 3 beautiful medieval towns: Marostica (nicknamed "the City of Chess" and mostly known for its delicious cherries (Festival in May) and the live chess game (September every 2 years), Bassano Del Grappa & Asolo.
The licensed driver-guide will pick you up on Piazzale Roma in Venice to drive you first to Marostica in the province of Vicenza in the Veneto region (1.5-hour drive). There, with your licensed driver-guide, you will be able to see the huge medieval walls climbing the hill, the Lower and Upper Castles, the Doglione Palace and the Piazza Castello with the famous chessboard on the marble paving where the whole City plays a live game every other year in September to re-enact a 1454 episode: two noblemen were in love with the beautiful daughter of the Castle Lord, Lionora. The Lord ordered them to solve the problem over a game of chess instead of a bloody duel.
Moving on you visit the nearby peaceful town of Bassano del Grappa – synonymous with its production of the potent liquor Grappa - ‘firewater of the mountains’. Crossing the celebrated Palladian bridge over the Riviera del Brenta we visit the famous distillery with its shop situated right on the bridge and enjoy a taste of the famous Grappa! You will then have a break for lunch in a local osteria with your licensed driver-guide and maybe a sip on Grappa or Italy’s most famous liquor, Limoncello!
Then our licensed driver-guide will finish the tour by showing you the "City of a Hundred Horizons", Asolo, which is one of the most picturesque old town centres in Italy. Contained within the ancient walls that branch off from the 12th century fortress, in every corner it preserves testimonies of its thousand-year old history. A fascinating place on the rolling Asolan hills, Asolo was a destination for poets and writers, artists and travellers that found inspiration and harmony here. Among them the English poet Robert Browning, the Divine theatre actress Eleonora Duse, the composer Gian Francesco Malipiero, the English writer and traveller Freya Stark.
Our driver-guide will then drive you back to Venice and drop you off at Piazzale Roma.
Our standard pick-up/drop-off for this tour is from Piazzale Roma.
It is also possible to pick you up from somewhere else at an extra cost, please contact us to receive our quote.
